New players from W and Meguro families in 2025 Kawasaki range
Feeding the global demand for entry level stylish machines, Kawasaki will introduce two models in the lightweight class for 2025. Both vying for attention, the models are respectively in the much-cherished W family and the respected Meguro line.
While the famous W brand can trace its roots way back to the W1 650 of 1966 (Kawasaki’s first large capacity four stroke machine), Meguro enjoys an even longer heritage as one of Japan’s most prestigious two-wheel names which proudly celebrates its centenary in 2024 – hence the “centennial beat” tagline for the new S1.
Using a robust and characterful air-cooled, single cylinder engine mounted in a common chassis, each machine varies in its styling approach with the W230 model rightly promoted as the “original icon” while the Meguro S1 harks back to the popular 250cc SG model of the 1960’s.
Offering linear power delivery and ample torque throughout the rev range, especially at low- to mid-rpm, the engine offers comfortable acceleration with a pleasant pulsating sensation, which is further bolstered by a balancer facilitating smooth overall progress. Special care was given to the design to produce classic looks for the modern engine, with sculpted parts including large, rounded fins on the cylinder head.
In terms of the chassis, compact proportions deliver smooth, easy handling for a wide range of riders. The slim design also contributes to a relaxed reach to the ground for the rider’s feet. Being one of the lightest models in the 250cc retro sport category at 143 kg, the handling enhances rider confidence while an excellent power-to-weight ratio is another benefit. Having one of the lowest seat heights in their class, the W230 and Meguro S1 are suited to a wide range of riders, bringing the rich W and Meguro experience to a broader audience.
Upfront ø37 mm telescopic forks contribute to well-balanced, composed handling on the street while at the rear a twin shock setup promotes a classic ride feel. The rear shocks also offer 5-step preload adjustment. Steel fenders front and rear, “pea-shooter” style exhausts, wire spoked wheels and old style twin meters underpin the authenticity while the two machines differ in styling and finish. For example, the fuel tank of the W230 is painted and adorned by a 3D W badge while the Meguro has a chromed fuel tank with painted panels and, appropriately, an evocative Meguro badge. Even the look of the meters fitted to each machine and seat finishes differ such is the attention to detail.
Things can only be original once, and Kawasaki is proud to protect and promote the originality and heritage of the W and Meguro brands while delivering the thrill of ownership to a new generation of riders. W230 or Meguro S1, it’s a tough call but either way authentic good times are sure to be enjoyed.
